Worcester Art Museum

A year ago today I visited the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Mass.  We were in town that weekend for a concert and whenever I visit a new city, I always seek out their art institutions.  I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered this incredible gem and I strongly urge anyone in the area (or even passing through) to visit.

Their collections are beautifully maintained and offer creative learning opportunities for adults and children throughout.  I went early on a Saturday morning (the first Saturday of the month) and admission was free.  They had a Kandinsky that was pure bliss and was quite possibly my favorite piece on display.  There was an activity room for kids that encouraged creative play and was inspired by their extensive collection of Medieval arms and armor.  At the time I visited, they were featuring an epic Flemish tapestry (“The Last Judgment” from ca. 1505) that they had just restored – it was incredible!

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
