Tree Spirit & No-Face

These little paintings measure 4” x 4” each and are, of course, continuing my fascination with the films of Hayao Miyazaki.  “Tree Spirit” depicts one of the many tiny spirits who live in the forest in the film, “Princess Mononoke.”  They are indicators of a happy, healthy and thriving environment.  As the forest is destroyed, so are the tree spirits.

“No-Face” depicts a character from Miyazaki’s film, “Spirted Away.”  When the audience first meets No-Face, he is a mysterious creature who seems to only appear around the main character, Chihiro.  Eventually, No-Face becomes visible to everyone and begins to wreak havoc on all those around him.

The beauty of Miyazaki’s films is that no character is completely good or completely evil.  His films strive to reinforce the importance of balance in all things.
