“Mononoke”

I am sharing new artwork every day this week and to kick things off, here is my piece inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s, “Princess Mononoke.”  This film is exceptional in that it deals with the complexities of humans coexisting with nature while still pursuing technological progress.  This painting is inspired by the mask worn by San, one of the main characters and the “princess” of the film’s title.  San is human, but was raised by a wolf-god and is determined to protect her lands from invading humans at all cost.

Incidentally, the English translation of this film was written by my favorite author and the greatest living writer today, Neil Gaiman.  It is an incredible and moving film that illustrates the positives and negatives to each side of a debate and points out that rarely is one side purely good and the other purely evil.

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
