I’m keeping New Art Week rolling with this lil’ guy inspired by the highly debated Porgs in the upcoming Star Wars film, “The Last Jedi.” The film won’t be released until next month and the presence of Porgs in early marketing (children’s books, plush, the film’s most recent trailer, a photo in Entertainment Weekly, etc.) have audiences divided. Some think the Porgs are just another cute lifeform to be discovered in the Star Wars universe. Other fans worry that the Porgs are outright attempts to market what most expect to be a dark film to younger audiences. Or worse, could they be the new Jar Jar Binks?
The jury is still out, but I am actually looking forward to the debut of these creatures. I have my own hypothesis that they are seemingly cute and sweet creatures with their own “dark side,” if you will. I suspect that they are perpetually annoyed with the increasing number of other lifeforms arriving on their secluded island of Ahch-To. It was one thing for Luke to show up, but then Rey and who knows who else. My hope is that their “cuteness” shrouds a vicious protective anger that flares up when someone they’ve befriended is hurt or in danger. Basically, I would love to see a dozen of these guys violently take out a bad guy and then carry on as if nothing happened. I guess we’ll all find out on December 15th!
“Porg” is acrylic on canvas, measures 10″ x 10″ and is priced at $45. If interested, email me at WanderlustArts@outlook.com.
