The Ultimate “-ism” of Modern Art

What is it???

Surrealism, of course!

Saturday I wrapped the last lecture in my newest series, “Modern Art Madness!” I am so grateful to the Winter Garden Art Association for hosting this series and to all the attendees who participated.

We ended our whirlwind adventure through Modern Art’s many “-isms” by discussing Surrealism and its connections to Dada. While Duchamp was dedicated to changing how the viewer defines “Art,” Dali was determined to redefine the role/purpose of the “Artist.”  Surrealism was also a monumental reaction to Dada.  Dada focused on tearing down the institution of “Art” the same way WW1 destroyed the world.  Surrealism was focused on creating a new reality on the tabula rasa – or clean slate – provided by Dada.
