Another Year Passes

Last week, Central Floridians honored and celebrated the 49 souls lost at Pulse in a multitude of memorials and events.  It is sometimes difficult to comprehend memorializing the anniversary of a horrifying massacre at a dance club.  I am comforted in the thought that remembering and weeping helps sustain the memories of the 49 and helps our community remain united against hate.

I visited the special exhibition, “Another Year Passes: Orlando After the Pulse Nightclub Massacre,” and was overwhelmed with emotion.  This exhibition is exceptional, with a massive amount of artifacts on display and dance music playing overhead.  All information cards were presented in both English and Spanish and also described the extremely detailed conservation process.

This exhibition showed me how important art is when dealing with complex and challenging social issues.  I will be writing a series of posts discussing art’s role in helping to cope with traumatic events and opening doors to discussion and debate over hot-button topics.  Look for those posts soon!

I decided to make myself vulnerable and find out what a real, genuine Adrienne H. Lee artwork would look like. The process was challenging and emotional and revelatory. I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
