Broad Strokes

The Art Lovers Book Club is going incredibly well which proves that sometimes creative experiments work!  I am sad to see this series come to a close (for the summer – don’t worry, it WILL be back), but I am so glad I chose this one for the last book of the series.

Broad Strokes: 15 Women Who Made Art and Made History (In That Order) by Bridget Quinn is the art history book we all need to read right now.  Quinn’s writing style is quick, inventive, insightful and humorous.  I openly wept twice.  The book reads almost like a conversation – like you are sitting down with Quinn over coffee talking about your favorite artists.

I knew two of the women artists featured in this book and had heard of a few of the others, but so much of the information provided was brand new… and that is sad in 2018.  I am all about celebrating women artists and shouting their names from the rooftops.  Quinn even included one of my favorite quotes, “For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.”  Not any more, my friends.  Not any more.

I decided to make myself vulnerable and find out what a real, genuine Adrienne H. Lee artwork would look like. The process was challenging and emotional and revelatory. I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
