How to Read a Painting – COLOR

Have you ever noticed that COLOR plays a vital role in filmmaking?  The image attached to this post is a before-and-after shot of a scene from the film, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” It is a perfect example of the role COLOR plays in creating an emotional feeling for a film or establishing a time frame for the events taking place in a film.  In the unedited original footage (top), the scene is full of vibrant greens making the scene feel very lush.  However, the story of the film takes place during the Great Depression and color-correcting the film stock to emphasize sepia tones and earthy browns, helps to establish this time period.

The same goes for ART!  My lecture series, “How to Read a Painting,” debuts this Saturday with an in-depth look at the role COLOR plays in ART.

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
