While in Chicago last month, I visited the Museum of Broadcast Communications. The ticket counter was at the foot of a flight of stairs and at the top of those stairs was an eye-catching sculpture. At first glance, I thought it was a piece by Name June Paik, but it was actually a piece by one of Paik’s students.
“Media Tower” was created by artist Mark Patsfall in 2011 and is dedicated to Nam June Paik, the artist’s mentor. What a powerful tribute and homage to an artistic pioneer!
Here is a brief excerpt from the information provided by the MBC…
The MBC originally sent Patsfall a truck filled with decommissioned broadcast-studio equipment, which he then deconstructed, literally and figuratively. Along with old televisions and radios from his own collection, this material became the “skin” of ‘Media Tower,’ and during its construction, Patsfall also implemented six video channels of vintage TV clips provided by the MBC.

What a great homage indeed! I love the symbolism and the prestige that the work expresses. It only further confirms my need to get out to Chicago!
