The First Monday in May

While doing research for my most recent class – The Art World: Today – I came across a documentary called “The First Monday in May.”  Since I am devoting an entire class session to fashion’s 21st century role in the art world, I thought it would be a good idea to check this documentary out and I am so glad I did!

This film from 2016 is currently streaming on Netflix and documents the planning and execution of The Met Gala of 2015.  Describing this documentary as “behind the scenes” is barely scratching the surface.  This film details just how difficult it is to pull off a multi-million-dollar fundraiser that is wildly elaborate, relies on celebrity attendance (and donations) and must also speak to something pertinent in both fashion and the art world.  It is also an intriguing commentary on how art institutions today must rely on the perfect combination of celebrity, money and haute couture to keep their doors open.

“The First Monday in May” is currently streaming on Netflix.
