The Florida Prize in Contemporary Art 2019

If you live in Orlando and have not yet visited the Orlando Museum of Art to view the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art exhibition… what are you waiting for?!

Closing on August 18th, this annual event only features artists working in the state of Florida and always provides a timely glimpse into the social and political themes and concerns of artists working right now.  This year’s show is powerful and dark and it addressed everything from the opioid crisis in Central Florida to immigration to the impact of climate change on The Sunshine State.

The very best part of this year’s exhibit is the installation by Florida Prize winner Edison Penafiel titled Ni Aqui, Ni Alla (Neither Here, Nor There).  An image of the installation is attached to this post and should be experienced in person as soon as possible.  While this year’s exhibition was not my favorite, Penafiel’s installation alone was worth the price of admission.
