A Piece of the World

The 2019 edition of the Art Lovers Book Club concluded this past Saturday with a discussion of A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline.  I was really moved by this book as it is told from the perspective of Christina Olson, the subject of Andrew Wyeth’s most famous painting, “Christina’s World.”

The author did an outstanding job of researching the people who were part of Andrew Wyeth’s close-knit circle.  You know me – I love research!  She even goes so far as to thank the historical location docents (by name!) who assisted in her research and provided informational tours.  The real power of this novel is not that it is about Andrew Wyeth or even about the painting – it is the story of Christina.  Christina Olson, an unmarried, childless woman living in the early 20th century in America with a chronic and debilitating illness, who was forever captured in paint on canvas.  I am so glad I got to know her.
