Knowth

Not far from the Newgrange site is another passage tomb – Knowth.  The Knowth site is interesting in that it is one large mound surrounded by a number of smaller mounds.  We were allowed to go inside the large, central mound, but only so far as the innermost chambers and the passage itself is beginning to crumble.  However, scientists and scholars harnessed the power of technology to do a complete digital scan of the interior and created a video which can be viewed to see the innermost chambers.  It is rather impressive!

Again, this site is full of concentric circle and spiral stone engravings and the central mound does have a solar significance.  On the spring and autumnal equinoxes, the light from the sun hits a particular stone marker outside the mound.

The Knowth mound offers something special, too… the opportunity to climb to the top for an incredible view of the Boyne Valley.
