“Weathering With You”

“Weathering With You” is the sophomore effort of director Makoto Shinkai that is currently taking the world of animation by storm.  This film will not only appeal to fans of the Studio Ghibli films produced by the esteemed living legend Hayao Miyazaki, but to anyone who appreciates animated film-making, whether hand-drawn or computer generated.

Without giving away any spoilers, “Weathering With You” explores the relationship between humans and the weather, but not in a way you might expect.  It is this surprising revelation that drives a large part of the film’s plot.  Beyond the moving story and a heart-felt soundtrack, it is the artwork that will astound the viewer.  Shinkai explains that with so many scenes depicting falling rain, a combination of hand-drawn animation and computer-generated animation were required to create realistic effects.  Some scenes were so realistic that they nearly looked like film!

“Weathering With You” is a stunning work of art and I highly recommend it!
