Artemisia at the NGA

The National Gallery of Art in London will open what looks to be an incredible show celebrating one of the greatest Italian Baroque painters of all time.  Artemisia opens at the NGA on April 4th of this year and will showcase 30 works by Artemisia Gentileschi including works on loan from private collections.

This was supposed to be an exciting time for museum-goers, art historians and art enthusiasts as Artemisia was not the only long-awaited, much-hyped art exhibition opening in 2020.  This year looked very promising for art institutions around the world, but museum workers and goers are suddenly having to reconsider everything due to the rapid spread of COVID-19.  Fashion Week recently concluded with multiple runway shows being cancelled or postponed.  Some fashion houses traded traditional runway shows for live-streamed events to prevent large crowds of people from gathering in one location.  Since the country of Italy has effectively shut down due to the virus, the epic Raphael exhibition in Rome has been closed until further notice.  The Louvre itself closed for three days due to staff wary of the French government’s handling of the virus situation.

While I am personally unsure how all this will play out, my advice is to stay informed, wash your hands and keep studying art… even if it’s from the comfort of your own home.

The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
