Ruth Asawa Stamps

Asawa was a Japanese American artist and educator that the U.S. government placed in an internment camp – on U.S. soil – during WW2. While in the camp, Asawa developed her creative skills by studying Japanese art methods with the older generations of fellow prisoners and studied with Disney animators… WHO WERE ALSO IN THE CAMP.

Later in life, she studied at Black Mountain College in N.C. As an art historian, I’ve often heard of the illustrious group of artists who came out of Black Mountain – Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Josef Albers – all dudes, of course. But, YES, women artists were there, too, including Asawa.

Asawa is probably best known for her hanging sculptures made of woven wire of which she said sculpting with wire was like drawing in three dimensions.

The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
