Another 15 Minutes for Andy

It seems that Andy Warhol is having a moment.

Earlier this month, Netflix debuted a six-part documentary about the art world superstar titled “The Andy Warhol Diaries.” The producers mine Warhol’s most personal and intimate thoughts for new information and also to gain insight. They attempt the daring feat of answering an unanswerable question… who was the real Andy Warhol?

The Brooklyn Museum is currently hosting an exhibition titled Andy Warhol: Revelation that acknowledges the multitude of religious references in his work, creating a rare opportunity to discuss the role his faith played in inspiring these pieces.

And, there’s always Marilyn! In May, Warhol’s “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” from ca. 1964 goes to auction with estimates projecting a record-setting sale price of $200+ million.

So… why all the hype? And why now?

The New York Times recently published an article discussing what they call “Warhol-mania” and the journalist brings up some interesting points. However, she does not go so far as to propose any theories about why… why a revived fascination with Andy Warhol and why now?

I submit these queries to YOU!

I want to hear your thoughts on why Andy Warhol is having yet another fifteen minutes of fame and why is it happening right now. Keep in mind the definition of zeitgeist – literally, time spirit – and how ART does not create the zeitgeist, it is a reaction to it.

What are we – society, culture, creatives, the art world – reacting to in the world right now that has us collectively reexamining not only the artwork of Andy Warhol, but also the details and nuances of his life personal life?

Leave your thoughts in the comments! I look forward to hearing your perspectives!

  2. Maybe, the Warhol fascination dovetails with the fascination with the 70’s and 80’s NYC gritty arts scene? Also, his factory-oriented printmaking defied the concept of originality. . He took American icons and trivialized them, by blowing out color and repeating images. In this current era of copycat culture, me-tooism(not THAT kind) and viral memes — repetitive images are the norm. Also, his egotism — it’s cool to exhibit braggadocio, subvert and fly one’s freak flag.

Some of his films were downright shocking, and I was only in my 20’s when seeing them. I love the guy!
