The Met Gala Returns

The Met Gala returns to the first Monday in May next week and the art world is abuzz with who might be in attendance and what everyone will be wearing. While there was no gala in 2020 due to COVID-19, a truncated version of the gala took place in September of 2021. This year’s event, however, aims to return the spectacle to its rightful place as the pinnacle of art, fashion and celebrity… and money, of course!

This year’s theme is In America: An Anthology of Fashion and honestly, I have no idea what to expect! Will this year’s attendees go bigger than ever before with their outfits or will they choose a tamer route? Will we see garments in red, white and blue or embellished with the stars and stripes? Any references to the so-called mystique of the “wild west” or to fashion trends from other decades?

I have so many questions and I can’t wait to see what happens!

Last year’s Met Gala explored what it meant to have “American style” as referenced by the Costume Institute’s current exhibit, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. I think the one thing we can expect is that this year’s gala will be a compliment to last year’s and that participants will continue to ponder what fashion looks like in America in the 21st century and, more specifically, in 2022.

  1. Have you heard about Blake Lively transformation to a completely different gown right there on the red carpet swapping her gown and gloves from pink and bronze to blue ??? Can’t wait to hear (and see) more about it.

  2. Artistic design of Blake Lively gown copper to patina is stunning w/o changing colors when revealed. 2 people who look like art in paper bags are Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds so they don’t need fashion!
