“Hilma”

Exciting news for those who love art, cinema and biographies as the life of artist Hilma af Klint comes to the big screen!

While there is currently no release date for the film in the U.S., those in the U.K. can watch the film when it’s released on October 28th. Written and directed by Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, etc.), this film is truly a family affair as his daughter (Tora Hallstrom) plays the younger Hilma and his wife, the esteemed Lena Olin, takes on the role of the older Hilma.

Stills from the film are exquisite and show Hilma working with her friends, The Five (De Fem), as they navigate what it means to be women artists who are also practicing spiritualists.

It is somewhat shocking to see actual Victorian era women in the act of painting artworks that are so very clearly “Modern” and that are also so very far ahead of their own time, both art historically and socially.

I can hardly contain my excitement for this film and for all the people around the world who will be introduced to Hilma and her work, quite possibly for the very first time.

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
