Pop culture and art history join forces in Coca-Cola’s newest ad campaign to inspire a tired and unmotivated art student as he sketches in a museum full of what Coke describes as “real magic.” More like a short film than a commercial, the ad execs over at Coke combine easily identifiable works from art history with more recent pieces created by contemporary artists to make sure our protagonist gets a creative boost from a bottle of soda.

The short film-commercial is somewhat clever and we see the iconic Coke bottle translated into a variety of artistic styles. However, the storytelling process relies heavily on special effects, possibly to a fault. Combine the immense amount of special effects with the lightening fast editing and some of the best moments (like looking out from the painting into the busy museum) are over before the viewer has the chance to realize what is happening.

What are your thoughts on this ad campaign? Would Andy Warhol be proud that a major corporation like Coca-Cola would “shout out” his work? Share your thoughts!
