If you think you know what an exhibition of fiber arts pieces looks like, I can confirm that you don’t. That’s because the medium of fiber arts is so expansive and so varied that the results are quite literally impossible to predict. It’s in that vein of joyful unpredictability that the Leesburg Center for the Arts showcases the work of local fiber artists in their current exhibition “The Fabric of Life,” on view through October 28, 2023.

It’s a bold move to dedicate an entire exhibition to the fiber arts, but it pays off in spades as this show is worth the drive to Leesburg, FL. Upon entering the gallery, the first thing you’ll notice are the vibrant colors. Then you’ll notice the whimsy. These artists are not only sharing their extensive talent and technical skill (which is prevalent and obvious), but they are also having FUN and it shows.

The day I visited this exhibition, I overheard a fellow visitor say to herself, “I had no idea there were so many fiber artists!” This statement really struck me because I felt similarly. And then I felt sad because the reason why she and I were both stunned by the vast creative output of these artists is that they are rarely – if ever – featured as the main event or the primary focus of an exhibition.
The fiber arts are still, even in 2023, relegated to the sidelines of the art world, not just locally but at large. This show clearly sets about to change that pitiful perception of the fiber arts by bringing the medium and its artists to the center stage to be properly celebrated. And it does!

I personally was overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of pieces but it was the quality of the work that had me enthralled. This is an exhibition that requires your time or multiple visits as I highly doubt you’ll be able to see and appreciate the intricate details and clever nuances of the work with a quick sweep of the gallery.

Whatever you do, do not miss this show. It truly is a celebration of the medium and its under-recognized artists. It is on view now through most of October and it is FREE to view. I’m already making plans for my repeat visit.
