Berthe Morisot

Have you ever heard of Berthe Morisot?

Morisot was a highly acclaimed French Impressionist who was admired and respected by her peers.  Her hero was Camille Corot and her brother-in-law was Edouard Manet.  Her work appeared in every Impressionist show, but one – that year she was pregnant.  One can view this painting by Morisot, “Woman at Her Toilette,” at the Art Institute of Chicago.

A year after her death, her closest friends hung an epic 400-piece retrospective of her work.  Who were the curators of this incredible show?  Degas, Monet and Renoir took on the responsibility of honoring their talented friend and it was said of this event, “No exhibition in the history of art has ever had a more distinguished installation committee.”

I decided to make myself vulnerable and find out what a real, genuine Adrienne H. Lee artwork would look like. The process was challenging and emotional and revelatory. I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
