Frida Kahlo in “Coco”

If you are one of the few who has not yet seen the Disney Pixar film “Coco,” then you are missing out on one of the most hilarious “cameos” in a recent film.  “Coco” is the story of a young boy who is transported to The Land of the Dead on Dia de los Muertos.  In his struggle to return to The Land of the Living, he procures the aid of a variety of citizens of The Land of the Dead, including the “celebrity” Frida Kahlo, who is in the midst of rehearsing an epic performance art piece.

In my class on Frida Kahlo with the Rollins Center for Lifelong Learning, we discuss not only Frida’s life and work, but also how she is perceived – as an artist, as a woman and as a pop culture icon.
