My Myopia

On your next visit to the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, be sure to check out the exhibition, “My Myopia,” by artist Trong Gia Nguyen.  With Nguyen’s work hanging from the ceiling, the curators at CFAM transform a plain and empty room into a mesmerizing art installation.  Guests are free to move about each piece offering a unique opportunity to interact with the artwork and essentially become part of the installation.

Here is a quote from the information provided by the museum…

“Keenly aware of power dynamics in museum and gallery settings, Trong Gia Nguyen seeks to disturb and reinvent traditional viewing experiences. Nguyen’s series of windows replicate the familiar iron security window grates that are commonly found in older colonial homes in Vietnam. However, as they are constructed of thin wood, this version is incredibly fragile and unable to serve any purpose of security. Their design contains pleasant geometric patterns that can go unnoticed.”

I decided to make myself vulnerable and find out what a real, genuine Adrienne H. Lee artwork would look like. The process was challenging and emotional and revelatory. I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
