Art as Memorial

Currently on view at the Orange County Regional History Center is this piece memorializing the 49 victims of the Pulse massacre.  Created by Orlando artist, Georgia Williams, each colorful ceramic tile depicts the portrait of one of those lost on June 12, 2016.

Art can help when coping with traumatic events.  The reasons behind war, natural disasters, gun violence and other traumas can be hard to fathom and are, typically, not easily explained.  Art allows those struggling with extreme emotion a way to process that emotion through the physical act of creativity.  This act moves the intangible – feelings, emotions, thoughts, worries, fears, sadness – to the tangible world and results in a physical object.  This physical object can then exist on its own, a work of art full of meaning and powerful emotion.
