Kids & Vincent van Gogh

It can sometimes be difficult to explain art historical movements, or even the lives of certain artists, to children.  For the recent Take pART event, I was asked to write about Vincent van Gogh and his painting “Starry Night” for a kid’s art activity.  Here’s what I came up with…

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who lived from 1853 – 1890.  Van Gogh loved nature and spent most of his time painting outside.  He thought that it was more important to paint what a person feels than to paint something very realistically.  That is why he often used bright colors and quick, swirling brushstrokes.

This painting is titled “Starry Night” and was painted by Van Gogh in 1889.  When you look at this painting, how does it make you feel?  What do you think Van Gogh was feeling when he created this painting?

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
