Mary Magdalene

The story of the Magdalene is a wild, weird and complex one that is more mythic legend than factual event.  For starters, throughout art history she is depicted as a sort of amalgam of a few different women mentioned in the Bible’s four gospels of the New Testament.  Second, her story takes an extreme turn into fantasy during the Middle Ages when it is revealed that she and her siblings (Martha and Lazarus) end up in France after being run out of Jerusalem post-resurrection.

I will be discussing the story of Mary Magdalene quite a bit over the next few days.  Here’s how to get in on all the art history action…

You can join me for the final session of “How to Read a Painting” where we will discuss STORIES (including the story of the Magdalene) this Saturday at the Winter Garden Art Association.  For more information, please visit…
