Tampa Museum of Art

When I travel, I try to keep an open mind about the art institutions located in the cities I visit.  When you visit a large metropolitan area, like Chicago or Boston, you don’t have to worry so much about the quality (or in those cases, the sheer magnitude) of the city’s art institutions.  However, visiting a smaller city that is not necessarily known as an “artsy” place can yield some artistic surprises in the form of top-notch art museums.  Two examples of this quickly come to mind – the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Mass. and the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA.

That’s why, when I visited the Tampa Museum of Art recently, a mere two hours from where I live, I felt wildly embarrassed for not taking my own advice.  The TMA is a small, but impactful art institution situated across the Hillsborough River from the University of Tampa.  Their current shows are astounding and their upcoming exhibitions show a lot of promise.  Next week’s blog posts will feature more in-depth discussions of the TMA’s current exhibitions, so stay tuned!

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
