Velvet Buzzsaw

“Velvet Buzzsaw” is the newest film from the writer and director of “Nightcrawler,” Dan Gilroy.  It debuted on Netflix on February 1st and it centers around a group of art world colleagues as they discover the work of a recently deceased outsider artist.  That is the very brief, no spoilers description of a film that truly defies categorization.  With elements of horror and science fiction, “Velvet Buzzsaw” is a dark comedic satire that skewers the art world and revels in its pretentiousness and absurdity.

I loved it!

I completely understand that the practices and jargon of the art world will alienate some viewers.  However, the incredible ensemble cast (including Jake Gyllenhaal, featured in the image attached to this post) is fun to watch and together they utter some of the most hilarious one-liners I have ever heard.  Additionally, the film is beautifully shot making even L.A. look appealing.

The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
