Winifred Johnson Clive: An Artist at Home and Abroad

If you are in the Central Florida area or passing through in the next few weeks, I highly recommend visiting the Winifred Johnson Clive exhibit at the Orlando Museum of Art.  This exhibition really caught me by surprise!  I was not aware of this artist before seeing the show, but I was truly taken with a number of her pieces.  I am not a huge fan of landscapes, but Clive brings something fresh and new to traditional landscape painting.  Are they abstract?  Are they color field?  Are they something more than an art historical label?

This resulted in paintings somewhere between Cubism and abstraction with a dash of action painting for good measure. Clive’s Springtime in the Pyrenees exemplifies this combination of art movements working in perfect harmony. Fields and houses are reduced to rectangular shapes in a village set against a mountainous backdrop. The palette is browns and beiges with muted bluish grays. Clive injects this landscape painting with activity and energy with the inclusion of four trees painted quickly and forcefully, keeping the viewer’s eye steadily moving through the scene.

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
