The Secret Supper

The 2nd Annual Art Lovers Book Club is in high gear at the Winter Garden Art Association!  My gratitude to everyone who attended yesterday’s discussion of Javier Sierra’s The Secret Supper.  Some really profound observations were shared and that made the experience even more enjoyable for me as facilitator.

One reason I chose Sierra’s novel is because I wanted to discuss the artwork of Leonardo da Vinci without having to read The Da Vinci Code.  I have a sort of love/hate relationship with The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.  On one hand, I am thrilled that millions of people read an actual book and one whose central theme/plot point is found in ART.  On the other hand, I don’t necessarily like the conspiracy theory frenzy it seemed to ignite in the public.  Humans sure do love conspiracy theories and seem to find them in anything if they look hard enough.

But maybe, that is the whole point of books like The Da Vinci Code and The Secret Supper.  If you want to see secrets and mysteries and hidden codes and puzzles, then that is exactly what you will see – “you see what you want to see.”  I wonder, then, in our obsession with the details if we are indeed missing the simple profundity of “the big picture?”

The 2019 edition of the Art Lovers Book Club concludes next month with a discussion of “A Piece of the World” by Christina Baker Kline.

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
