Blurred Lines

“Blurred Lines” is a Netflix documentary I referenced very heavily in my class, The Art World: TODAY.  It is a rare in-depth look at the art world that pulls no punches and plays out almost like a dark thriller.  With an emphasis on the role money plays in the art world at large, the filmmakers address all the key players: artists, dealers, collectors, museums, auction houses, art fairs and the art market itself.  The filmmakers also call into question whether the art market is over-saturated with mediocre art that merely “feeds the machine”of the art world.  This eventually brings to light an astounding revelation – that there is absolutely no regulation whatsoever of the art world.  The reasoning is that while attempts at regulation have been made in the past, the art world is such an unusual creature that it became too difficult to put significant rules into place.  Plus, since only the uber-rich were affected, any dirty dealings in the art world were considered “victimless crimes.”

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
