Wild & Witchy Women (In Art & Pop Culture)

You may recall that I began my most recent lecture series – The Artist as Alchemist: Spirituality, Science & Magic in Art – way back in September 2021. This lecture series consists of four lectures with the epic conclusion coming this month. Before I announce the final lecture in the series, let’s do a quick recap!

In September 2021, we discussed how the Neolithic people of Ireland built an enormous passage mound called Newgrange that was perfectly situated to “capture” sunlight at dawn on the Winter Solstice. We also talked about the creative (or scientific!) choice to decorate the giant kerbstones found at Newgrange with single and triple spirals and what those decorations could mean.

In October 2021, we delved into the life and artwork of Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist who communicated with “higher beings” who existed on a spiritual plane or dimension. The result was hundreds of artworks created in secret that not only conveyed spiritual messages, but were also abstract and non-representational.

In November 2021, we discussed The Book of Kells, a Medieval Irish manuscript that has survived the last 1200+ years in exceptional condition. As we analyzed the artwork, we saw fascinating artistic choices made by the illuminators and multiple levels of early Christian theological philosophy layered in the images.

My two loves – art history and pop culture – reach critical mass in this penultimate lecture presentation.  The “strong female lead” may seem like a tired Hollywood trope, but stories detailing the heroic feats of women have been depicted throughout art history for centuries.  Could pop culture heroines from blockbuster film franchises and hit TV shows be reinventions of art historical archetypes?  This extremely interactive discussion will challenge participants to reconsider and rethink their favorite “strong female lead” characters from today’s mass media.
