“The Inventor”

You all know how much I love animated films, so this week I’m choosing to highlight a very special movie that looks absolutely incredible and has a strong art historical theme. Combining both stop-motion and 2D animation, The Inventor tells the story of Leonardo da Vinci as he tests out his more ambitious inventions in the last few years of his life.

And it is absolutely adorable!

And a musical!

This project is clearly a labor of love for Jim Capobianco, writer and co-director of the film, as it took 12 years to complete!

What I really like about the marketing for this film is the educational outreach toward children. The website for The Inventor includes an option for children to receive a FREE “personalized” letter from Leonardo himself along with a “young inventors activity pack.”

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
