The Art of Dr. Seuss

I feel a certain connection to Dr. Seuss as we share the same birth date and because I grew up reading his books.  Longtime followers may recall that I painted a piece for a Dr. Seuss-inspired art show a couple of years ago (Francis McFeather) and shared that piece on the blog.

While we were in Chicago last month, my husband found something very interesting completely by accident.  We had spent the day at MOSI and were having an incredible meal of deep dish pizza at Gino’s East when my husband says, “Did you know there’s an art gallery dedicated to Dr. Seuss a few minutes from here?”  He had done a Google search for interesting things to do in the area and poof… we were on our way!

The Art of Dr. Seuss Gallery is a wonderful space exhibiting original sketches and illustrations, prints, sculptures and paintings by Theodor Seuss Geisel.  In the very same gallery were housed cartoons drawn by Geisel that were not quite political, but were definitely commentary and prints of his colorful and surreal paintings.  It was a powerful reminder of the extent of his artistic talents.

The painting on the far right of the image attached to this blog is titled Chase in the Forest and the painting to its left is titled Worm Burning Bright in the Forest in the Night.

I learned that if necessity is the mother of invention, then authenticity is the mother of reinvention. I reinvented myself and learned an entirely new medium. The resulting artwork surprised me, and it will surprise you, too. Some people wish for a fairytale ending. For me, the fairy tale is only the beginning.
